Choice of inspection glass material.
As a guide, toughened soda is suitable for continual use up to about 250°C, or up to about 300°C for short periods.
Toughened Borosilicate glass is suitable for use up to about 400°C to 450°C.
If the temperature is even higher, then consider quartz glass, which can withstand temperatures as high as 1000°C to 1100°C.
Note that at these extreme temperatures, the choice of gasket material tends to be a bigger problem than the glass. Many gasket materials tend to break down before 900°C is reached, which is well before the glass runs into problems.
Coloured glass discs are suitable for use up to about 200°C.
If the temperature is expected to exceed 200°C, then the coloured glass should be protected by installing an additional heat resisting glass on the 'hot' side. |
